StreamDek
Android TV, Google TV & Fire TV

Install StreamDek on Android TV

TV devices have no easy way to download a file, so the usual route is a downloader app and a short URL. Once it is on, pairing takes a code rather than a typed password.

Supported devices

Where the TV build runs

Anything running Android TV or Google TV, plus Amazon's Fire TV range, which is Android underneath. The interface is designed for a directional pad — every control is reachable without a touchscreen or a mouse.

Android TV & Google TV

Chromecast with Google TV, NVIDIA Shield, Xiaomi Mi Box, Onn boxes, and Android TV built into Sony, Philips, TCL and Hisense sets.

Fire TV

Fire TV Stick (2nd generation and later), Fire TV Cube and Fire TV Omni sets. Amazon calls sideloading “developer options”, but the process is the same.

Requirements

Android 8.0 or later, roughly 150 MB free, and a network connection the device shares with your phone for the quickest pairing. Package name: com.streamdek.tv.

Installation

Getting the APK onto the TV

  1. Allow apps from unknown sources

On Android TV or Google TV: Settings → System → About, click Build seven times to enable developer options, then Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources and enable your downloader app.

On Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options, then turn on Install unknown apps for the downloader.

  2. Install a downloader app

TV devices have no general-purpose browser, so use a file downloader from the device's own app store. It only needs to fetch a URL and hand the file to the installer.

  3. Fetch the StreamDek TV build

Point the downloader at the TV releases page and pick the latest APK. If typing a long URL with a remote is painful, open this page on your phone, follow the download link there, and use the short URL your downloader app offers instead.

  4. Install and open

Run the downloaded file, confirm the install, then delete the APK to reclaim the space. StreamDek appears in your app list.

  5. Pair with your account

StreamDek shows a short pairing code on the TV. Enter it from the StreamDek app on your phone or from the web Control Center, and the TV signs in without you typing an email address and password on screen. Profiles, watchlist and Continue Watching are there immediately.

Set it up from a browser. Adding addons, pasting Debrid API keys and arranging home rows is far quicker in the web Control Center. Whatever you change there applies to the TV straight away — you rarely need to configure anything with the remote.

Troubleshooting

If something goes wrong

The install is blocked

The unknown-sources permission is granted per app. Enabling it for one downloader does not enable it for another — check it is set for the app you actually used.

The pairing code will not accept

Codes are short-lived. If the screen has been sitting for a while, go back and request a fresh one rather than retyping the expired code.

The remote skips over a control

Every screen is meant to be fully navigable with a directional pad. If focus gets stuck somewhere, that is a bug worth reporting on the TV repository with the build number from Settings.

Video stutters on a Fire TV Stick

Older sticks struggle with high-bitrate 4K remuxes. Lower the preferred quality for that profile in the Control Center and the stream picker will favour sources the device can actually decode.

Put it on your phone too

The mobile app is the remote, the setup tool and the second screen — and it keeps your place in sync with the TV.
